Sip n quip with Kathy Lette in Galicia
Experience Galicia at its most magical, including privileged access to the extraordinary Bonfire of St John — a centuries-old midsummer ritual rarely encountered this intimately. This thoughtfully-curated journey blends the Camino de Santiago with behind-the-scenes cultural encounters: private vineyard visits, insider-led tastings and meaningful connections with the women shaping the region. Expect exceptional access, rich tradition, excellent local wines and a side order of sparkling repartee from your trip host and fellow guests.
In the Ribeiro region, Avandra guests are received not as visitors, but as invited guests of Xulia Bande at her Bodega Son de Arrieiro — one of Galicia’s most respected winemakers. She will guide you through her vineyards before opening her home for a relaxed, generous lunch — an experience that feels more like being part of her world than observing it.
At Anónimas Viticultoras, a quietly radical, female-led wine project, you’ll gain rare access to a collective rewriting the narrative of Spanish winemaking. Walk the vineyards with its founders, hear their story firsthand and share a long-table lunch that brings their philosophy vividly to life.
Beyond wine, the cultural access is equally considered. A privately guided exploration of Ourense reveals the stories behind its historic streets and thermal waters, while at Punta Faxilda, local legend and landscape are woven together in a way only an insider can offer.
And then there is the defining moment of the journey: the Bonfire of St John. Through Avandra’s connections, you will experience this powerful Galician midsummer ritual from within — not on the edges, but at its heart. Guided through its traditions, you’ll take part in an evening of fire, sea and symbolism that speaks to renewal, release and new beginnings.
The Bonfire of St John’s arrives not so much as a coastal festival, but as a reckoning with fire, salt air and superstition. By dusk, beaches are stippled with flames, each one a small act of defiance against bad luck, heartbreak or life’s general bumps in the road. You’re meant to jump them —an enthusiastic, maybe wine-fuelled leap into purification — though whether this guarantees renewal or singed eyebrows will of course depend on your timing.
There is something irresistibly romantic in the ritual: the Atlantic murmuring in the background, smoke curling into a violet sky, the sense that ancient customs still have agency here. Yet it’s not reverent. It’s celebratory, communal, a little chaotic — like all the best parties. Strangers press grilled sardines into your hands; teenagers dare each other closer to the flames. By midnight, you’ll feel spiritually cleansed, pleasantly exhausted, or both – which, frankly, is miracle enough.

Your host: Kathy Lette
Bestselling author, comedian and Australian institution Kathy Lette loves hiking as much as wine and so is incorporating both in hosting this trip to Galicia – along with her inimitable wit and warmth, guaranteeing great conversation and food for thought along the way.
‘What do women like most? I’d say, talking and walking, quipping and quaffing,’ she says. ‘The best thing about this trip is that we get to do all those things simultaneously. Exciting adventures, both physical and historical, are balanced out with unique boutique vineyard experiences. Plus, all that exercise makes for guilt-free gourmandising. So here’s cheers! Can’t wait for this delicious trip.’
Hotels
Hotel Virxe da Cerca by Pousadas Compostela: Your first hotel is a converted 18th-century Jesuit residence which combines a blend of historical charm, a serene, central base for exploring Santiago de Compostela. Escape the city with a coffee or glass of wine in its tranquil garden and enjoy the work of local artists rotated around the hotel without even leaving the building.
Pazo Los Escudos Hotel & Spa Resort is a stunning second 5-star stop on the beach in Bouzas. This converted Galician manor house (‘pazo’) is a short taxi ride from Vigo’s city centre and has stunning gardens with gated entrance onto the beach and spa with hot tub, sauna, hammam, indoor pool and outdoor pool (open in season – and during our trip!).
Gran Hotel Nagari Boutique & Spa is located in a historic building designed by renowned architect Manuel Gómez Román in 1960. Today it retains its imposing, listed façade but inside has been entirely renovated to create an eclectic and elegantly contemporary interior and is perfectly situated for exploring Vigo, but in a quiet enough location to feel secluded. There’s a gym, hot tub, sauna, and Turkish bath and rooftop Skyline Pool and spa circuit with panoramic views of the Vigo estuary – and a tapas terrace perfect for cocktails.

Breakfast at leisure
10:30 Set out on an hour’s drive to Leiro for an exclusive private visit to Bodega Son de Arrieiro, the vineyard of Xulia Bande. Xulia is a big deal in Northern Spain – a matriarch of wine, and in this very patriarchal place, even the male viticulturas defer to her. Bodega Son de Arrieiro is a tribute to Xulia’s grandfather and the ‘arrieiros’ (muleteers) who helped make Ribeiro wines famous by transporting them throughout Spain, and she honours their memory via her focus on indigenous grapes, sustainable viticulture, and low yields of high quality. This has resulted in Galician wines of great note including ‘Son de Arrieiro’ Tinto and ‘A Argallada de Xulia’.
In an exciting Avandra exclusive, Xulia will not only lead the group on a trekking tour of her vineyards and her winery, but will host you for a delicious homemade lunch at her house.
17:00 Relax at the local hot springs and then explore Ourense, a historic hot spring town via a guided tour of the charming old town.
19:00 Guess what? It’s tapas time again, and some mingling with the locals before heading back to Bouzas at the end of the evening.

- Punta Faxilda and local legends

10:30Travel to Pontevedra for a privately guided exploration of its beautifully preserved old town, including time within its vibrant market — an authentic window into Galician daily life, far from the usual tourist trail.
13:30Lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, where seasonal produce is elevated into quietly exceptional dishes.
15:00 Continue to Punta Faxilda, where sweeping ocean views are paired with stories known only to locals — from the haunting Santa Compaña to ancient beliefs about this coastline as a crossing point between worlds.
Later, explore Combarro, a remarkably preserved fishing village, where you’ll wander its atmospheric lanes and seafront granaries with the benefit of local insight that brings its history vividly to life.
19:00
This evening is the heart of the journey. Through Avandra’s insider access, you’ll experience the Bonfire of St John not as an observer, but as a participant. Known locally as Noite de San Xoán, this powerful midsummer ritual marks renewal and transformation — and is rarely accessed in such an intimate, authentic way.
Gather with locals as fires are lit along the shoreline. You’ll be guided through the traditions: writing down what you wish to leave behind, casting it into the flames, and — if you choose — jumping the fire for luck, as generations have done before you.
As the night deepens, the atmosphere becomes electric yet deeply personal — a shared moment of release, intention and celebration.
And for those tempted, the evening may end with a midnight swim in the Atlantic — a quietly exhilarating close to one of Galicia’s most meaningful cultural experiences.

Cris has made wine for many years, and Maria’s family has done so for generations. In As Cris says; ‘Anónimas is a project from the vine to the consumer, a tribute to the anonymous women that should have had their place in history and were never recognized. We collaborate with other women in the world of winegrowers, winemakers, and enologists to make these personal wines.’ During your time at this award-winning wine project, you will get to walk their vineyards and learn about their passion firsthand.
